Cleaning Lessons

Chores are an important lesson in responsibility and can be a great help in keeping your home in order. Below is a short post from The Tutoring Center, Roseville with ideas on how you can include small lessons in each chore.

Start With Your Plan

Each time that you have a lot of cleaning to do in a set period of time, you will start by making a list. The first time that this list will be seen by your children, however, will be when you are delegating tasks. By this time, they have missed out on a valuable time-management lesson. Instead, the next time that you are making your list, include your children.
  • As you create your list, explain to them any tips or techniques you use to remember all of the tasks you need to complete and how you ensure you don’t forget any important tasks.
  • When you are prioritizing each task, share with them the reason behind your decision as you rearrange each task by importance. Further, impress upon them the importance of prioritizing tasks.
  • While calculating the estimated time to complete each task, share your thoughts, such as your inclusion of preparation time and the resources needed.
  • When the time comes to piece it all together and plan out the day, enlist their help and teach them how you arrange your time to ensure you can achieve the most cleaning work.
In addition to being a great hands-on lesson, it also provides students with a general framework which they can use when managing competing study priorities.

Space and Measurements

For a more basic lesson, look to moving your furniture. As you all move from room to room, you will likely need to move furniture around. Instead of simply sliding a couch around, have your children measure each item and then, using this information, find an adequate replacement space. During this task, if you can see that your student has made a mistake and, for example, the couch isn’t going to fit where they believe it will, still help them try anyway. Being able to visualize where they made a mistake will help them to improve the next time.
