The Tutoring Center, Roseville CA

During your educational path you will write a large number of essays.  Whilst you will continue to learn how to write structured essays, it’s important not to lose sight of who is writing it.  In this post, The Tutoring Center in Roseville will share some ideas on keeping your essay yours.

Let the ideas flow

When writing your first draft, it’s important not to pay too much attention to structure of grammar, and to just let your ideas flow.  Giving your brain free rein to let your ideas flow can result in idea and opinion paths you previously hadn’t thought of when planning your essay. Remember, there will be plenty more opportunities to review your essay before you submit it.

Understand the question

When doing your SAT prep, be sure you read, and re-read the essay prompt. Not only it is important to have a clear understanding of what you will be writing about, but what the examiner is expecting. Referring back to the prompt can help to ensure your points remain on track and relevant as your essay progresses.

Second opinion

Once you are finally satisfied that your essay is finished and ready to be submitted, don’t be afraid to share it.  Find somebody whom you respect academically and ask for their opinion.  Receiving constructive criticism is a great way to learn new and more appropriate writing techniques.  After their opinion, ask for specifics to test their comprehension.  If your essay is well written it will be easier for them to absorb the knowledge and discuss it confidently with you. This provides the opportunity to clarify any essay points you made prior to submission.

Remember, it’s hard to hear criticism, so listen with an open mind.  You don’t have to take on every suggestion, but it could be a great benefit to listen to them.

Keeping your essays personal is an important task and skill, and can be a great complement for more structured learning to keep your education path on track.  If improving your essay writing skills interests you, our experts can provide reading, writing, and math help through one-to-one instruction or private tutoring in Roseville.
