Reading as a Family

If you’re looking for ways to improve your child’s reading skills, one of the best ways to do so is by setting aside some daily family reading time. Children, especially young children, learn from modeling and repetition; that’s why reading as a family can be beneficial. Try starting with 10 to 15 minutes of reading and build from there; reading them bedtime stories is a great way to start.

Spark Their Imagination Through Storytelling

Encouraging storytelling is another excellent way to practice and strengthen their reading skills. Storytelling can help spark their imagination and develop creative thinking skills. A way to do this is to ask them questions while reading about where they think the story is going or letting them come up with their own ending. These things help them develop their imagination and encourage them to be curious about books and their contents.

Make a Physical Space for Reading

As the last suggestion, having a physical space for reading can also encourage them to work on their reading skills. Some parents decide to have a reading nook for their children or a special couch or chair in their living room, but it’s important to remember that these things aren’t always necessary. Instead, try having a quiet space where they can read that is free of distractions and has interesting books around for them to pick up when they feel like it.
