Learning math is essential for your child’s academic success, and it’s also an extremely useful skill for everyday life. The Tutoring Center in Roseville would like to offer you some tactics for inspiring your child to love math.

Set a good example

You may not be confident about your own math skills but make sure to only communicate positivity to your child when it comes to their learning, as hearing ‘I’m no good at math’ or similar will make it seem a daunting or unpleasant prospect. Make sure that you encourage any natural curiosity your child has and be sure to reward them for being inquisitive.

Incorporate math in everyday life

A great way to sneak in math practice is to ask your child to help you work out how much your grocery bill adds up to, or ask for their help with the weights and measures when baking. You could also ask how many weeks’ allowance they need to buy a particular toy. This kind of approach will also help your child learn that math is useful in ‘real life’; it isn’t just for use in class and tests.

Make it fun

Alongside the above ‘stealth approach’ to incorporating math, consider playing math-oriented games with your child. There have never been more options available to parents, as the digital revolution has brought with it thousands of apps and games that are perfect for teaching math. However, you don’t need to rely on your computer or tablet; you can also turn to ‘old-fashioned’ games such as blackjack.

Consider your child’s learning style

Children learn in different ways, so don’t assume that there is a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching math. Some children are hands-on learners and as such will benefit hugely from puzzles based around spatial awareness (building models, for example), whereas other children may be visual learners and will flourish if provided with lots of images and diagrams rather than just written information.

At The Tutoring Center in Roseville we want to help your child excel, that’s why we have put together a range of guides such as how to prepare for SATS, and that’s also why we offer free diagnostic assessments to identify any academic areas in which your child may benefit from support.
