Dictionaries are helpful learning tools that can assist you in reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, and more. However, if you have a young child at home, it’s probable that you’ll have to teach them how to use the dictionary in order for them to make the most of it and learn with it. With this in mind, this post will go over a few tips you can put to good use to help your child to use the dictionary appropriately.

How to Use a Dictionary

Practice the Alphabet

Before they begin, your child should know their ABCs in order to use the dictionary effectively. If you notice that they still have trouble with it from time to time, practice it with them (sing along to the ABC song), so they can learn the order of the letters.

Give Them the Right Dictionary

If you have a young child at home, provide them a dictionary that’s suited for them. For instance, stay away from the hardcover medical dictionaries. Instead, opt for an updated, pocket-sized, soft cover English dictionary.

Teach Them About the Dictionary

Before they learn how to use the dictionary, they should know about the dictionary. For example, some include the words’ pronunciation and other useful information. Teach your child about the different components in the dictionary so they can make the most out of it.

Search for Words Effectively

If your child wants to look up an unknown word, tell them to begin by searching for the word’s first letter in the dictionary. When they’re in that part of the dictionary, they should focus on the guide words at the top of the page to find out if the word they need is in that page.

Understand the Meanings

If a definition has some unknown words of its own, motivate your child to search for them, too. Doing so will help them have a better understanding of the first word’s meaning. After all, what good is a dictionary if you can’t understand a definition?
